What is Qigong?

Qigong (氣功), which essentially translates as 'energy work', is among the most ancient esoteric practices and is the foundation of all energetic martial arts as well as healing practices. Qigong practice utilizes mental intention along with various postures, movements, and breath techniques in order to balance, harmonize, and direct the natural energetic systems of the body. These energies flow through the various meridian channels of the body and correlate to the organ systems and tissues of the physical body as well as the emotional and thought forms of the higher bodies. By learning to develop and control these energies, along with developing the body through the breath and movement, greater health and wellbeing can be achieved in all areas of life.

While qigong has long been practiced in esoteric circles, in recent years a steadily growing body of scientific research has emerged verifying the traditional claims of its many profound health benefits. As our understanding of the body and its processes grows, along with our understanding of energy and physics, we are coming to a greater awareness that the ancients were indeed accurate in their perception of the energetic world and its influence on our more gross everyday reality. It has now been widely demonstrated that our thoughts and intentions have a direct relationship with our physical function. It has been demonstrated that energetic thoughtforms have the ability to shape water molecules and alter their function. This holds true for the fluids, tissues, and cells of our bodies as well. In fact, modern quantum physics is showing that all material reality is in actuality energetic wave frequency. Differing mathematical wave functions give rise to differing frequencies which give rise to differing manifestations of physical reality. Biologically, in the field of epigenetics it has been shown that our intentions have a direct relationship to the manifestation of our genetics. In this way, we see that we are what we think, in simple terms.

Mental intent and breath go hand in hand to guide and develop the bodies, from the physical to the etheric and beyond. Qigong is the practice of training these disciplines in order to master the self. In our training, we learn how different patterns of breathing can alter the state of the bodies. We learn how certain postures and movements can direct the flow of the meridians, which can be likened to rivers of qi flowing throughout the body. In qigong, we devote our efforts to developing a greater knowledge of the self and its workings, and to the practical control of it. In this way, we are able to transform ourselves at every level into a more ideal version of ourselves.

Qigong is an excellent introductory practice for anyone who wishes to advance into other disciplines, as well as an excellent daily practice for even the most advanced practitioners. At the basic level, it can provide amazing health and wellness benefits. At the deepest levels, it is an endless exploration into the very fabric of reality.
