Vedic New Year

This year Chithirai 1, the first day of the Tamil calendar, falls on April 14th. This time, commonly known as Puthandu or Virasha Pirappu, is the first day of the new year and is celebrated in much the same spirit as other traditions. The timing is determined by the sidereal zodiac as Chithirai 1 falls on the date the Sun (Surya) moves into the sign of Aries (Mesa). While the tropical system holds to a more stable seasonal timeline of Aries beginning around the vernal equinox each year, the sidereal system follows the actual movement of the heavens which gradually changes over time.

Just as with other new year traditions, Chithirai 1 is seen as an auspicious day when we can take stock of our circumstances and aspirations for the coming year. It is a day when communities will gather together at the temple to pray and make offerings, and to perform pujas for cleansing and renewal in their lives and homes. There is also often the practice of viewing kanni (auspicious things) to promote prosperity for the coming year.

Although there are many culturally nuanced traditions that correspond to this holiday, there are a few basic principles and practices which can be done by just about anyone to observe the spirit of the season.

  1. Time for a "Spring cleaning." Open up the windows and enjoy the fresh air as you clean out any dust or unneeded clutter from the previous year. Spruce up the atmosphere with some live greenery and refresh your environment.

  2. Set aside some items that represent things you are grateful for or things that you are looking forward to in the coming year. Gather and arrange them in a way that allows you to see them easily as you arise in the morning and prepare for your day. This is akin to the practice of viewing kanni, and is said to bring prosperity.

  3. Make sure your clothing is clean and fresh for the new year. Take a bath as a symbol of cleansing the past, and have new clothes prepared for the new day.
