Late Autumn

Now we have reached the late Autumn season. The Fall changes have taken hold as the greenery is all but gone and the leaves cover the ground. We enter the final stretch before Winter arrives at the shortest day of the year. This is the time of Sagittarius. It is the final Fire sign of the Wheel, this time in the Mutable mode. Sagittarius represents the wisdom of the great teacher, Chiron. It is the culmination of knowledge and experience which affords us true understanding that goes beyond mere book knowledge. It is the journey of life.

As a Fire sign, Sagittarius is a sign of initiation. Aries begins our journey by initiating our existence itself. It brings us the awareness of the self, that we are here and we have a will and an experience to be had. From there we begin to develop our presence here on Earth. We grow and establish our physical bodies and our personal world. Next we reach Leo, which initiates us into our expression. Having established ourselves within, we begin to express it outwardly into the world and interact with those around us. We create and explore and become a part of the world as a whole. In this way we gain not only a sense of Self, but of our place in the whole, physically and emotionally. Once we arrive at Sagittarius, we are initiated into the realm of Spirit. Now we begin to take the knowledge and experiences we have gained in life and contemplate the greater meaning in our journey. What has it all been for? What is life really about? Sagittarius takes stock of all this and crafts our beliefs.

Many misunderstand the difference between knowledge and wisdom, and how the two interact and from where they are derived. An easy way to look at this is to look at the relationship between Sagittarius and its counterpart, Gemini. Gemini represents the accumulation of knowledge. Ruled by Mercury, Gemini seeks to know and understand all the information it can get its hands on. This is seen in people who devote themselves to tireless study and research and reading and experimenting. Gemini and Virgo, the two Mercury signs, together give us the realm of science. To endlessly accumulate knowledge and to figure out how everything works. This has become the predominant governing method of thought in the world today. Opposite these two signs are Sagittarius and Pisces, the two Jupiter signs. They are the depth of wisdom that comes from the experience of the journey and the connection with the unseen. The Jupiter signs are concerned far less with figuring out the mechanics of a thing and more with relating its place in the whole as a part of the universal scheme of creation. Not how does it work, but rather why is it in the first place. In this way we see that knowledge is the information regarding the structure, function, and mechanics of a thing. Wisdom, however, is the ability to connect that to the whole and to understand what it is on the deepest level. One can have great knowledge, but use it foolishly because they lack the wisdom to guide them. This is what we learn from Sagittarius. Gemini gives us knowledge, but only the experience of the journey in Sagittarius allows us to wisely employ that knowledge in the most useful and beneficial way. Knowledge and wisdom must always work harmoniously. An imbalance will lead to folly, just as we want to keep the energies of the signs in balance within ourselves.

As we begin to draw this Autumn season to a close, let us reflect on our experiences throughout the year. What have we learned? What have we gone through and what have we accomplish? We must take the time to meditate on these things so that we can truly acknowledge and assimilate the fruits of our journey and use them to grow. Sagittarius is the bird's-eye view where we take account of the bigger picture. So, this season, take the time to reflect, to give thanks, and to grow from your experiences in preparation for the next arc of the endless journey.
