Krittika Nakshatra

Krittika Nakshatra, also known as the "Star of Fire" or "The Cutter," is the third of the 27 Nakshatras or lunar constellations in Vedic astrology. It spans the zodiac sign of Aries and a part of Taurus, starting from 26.40 degrees of Aries and extending up to 10.00 degrees in Taurus. The ruling planet of Krittika Nakshatra is the Sun.

People born under this Nakshatra are believed to possess qualities such as determination, courage, leadership, and a strong sense of justice. They might exhibit a fiery temperament, passion, and intensity in their actions and pursuits.

Mythology of Krittika

The mythology of Krittika Nakshatra is associated with a popular Hindu myth involving the six Krittika sisters who are stars representing the Pleiades star cluster. The story is linked to the birth and upbringing of Kartikeya, the god of war.

According to the myth, Kartikeya was born to Shiva and Parvati, but he was raised by the Krittika sisters because of certain circumstances. Legend has it that the celestial nymphs, the wives of the seven sages (Saptarishi), became the Krittikas or Pleiades. They found a newborn baby (Kartikeya) floating on a pond or river and decided to collectively raise him. The six sisters (sometimes depicted as seven) took turns nursing and caring for Kartikeya, treating him as their own child.

However, due to their nurturing of Kartikeya, a conflict arose between the Krittikas and Parvati, Kartikeya's actual mother. Parvati was upset that the sisters claimed the child as their own, and this led to a dispute. To resolve the conflict, Lord Shiva intervened and explained the situation, ultimately reconciling the matter. In some versions of the myth, the Krittikas were cursed to remain childless for a while, but later their curse was lifted.

The Krittika sisters are highly revered in Hindu mythology for their maternal care and nurturing of Kartikeya. This tale signifies their selfless love and devotion towards the divine child and illustrates the bond between Kartikeya and the Krittikas. The connection between Kartikeya's upbringing by the Krittikas and their association with the Krittika Nakshatra is widely recognized in Hindu culture and mythology.
